Super Falcons |
Back home, football fans in Abuja are applauding the Falcons, maintaining that the team had made the country proud with the earlier defeat of host country and Tanzania.
Nigeria finished second in Group A with six points from three matches while Cote D’Ivoire came top with maximum nine points.
However, Nigerians who commented on the match said the team has shown class and gold medal potentials. Alex Mana, Lecturer in the National Institute of Sports (NIS), said the team had done well.
``I am happy with the team's performance though I was optimistic that the team would beat Cote D'Ivoire.
``But all the same, the girls have done well and we are proud of them.
``We want them to remain positive and push hard to get gold for the country, '' Mana said.
Aliyu Mohammed, a former Director of Sports in Katsina State, applauded the team’s performance while urging them to do better.
``The team did marvelously well. This is what we expect from our national teams when they go out to play.
``However, they should not take any chances but remain focused as the ultimate is a gold medal.
``I also think that the technical crew is living up to expectations. So, I must commend their efforts and urge them to do more,’’ Mohammed said.
Ngozi Ezeh, Coach of Capital City Doves of Abuja, a Nigeria Women Professional League (NWPL) club side, said: ``Falcons have done us proud.
``They are African champions and we want them to defend that title by clinching the gold medal.
``Without doubt, I am sure they will.''
The games, which began on Sept. 4, is expected to end on Sept. 19, 2015.
The Falcons, who suffered a shock loss in their final group game on Saturday to Cote d’Ivoire, finished second in their group and will now confront Cameroon who ‘luckily’ finished tops in Group A where all three teams were tied on points.
The game will be played on Tuesday, September 15.
