A Lagos High Court, Igbosere, on Tuesday discharged and acquitted the immediate past Chairman of Island Club, Prince Ademola Dada, of perjury.

 Dada, a Lagos socialite, had, sometime in 2011, been charged for allegedly making false declaration on oath and had pleaded not guilty.

 Delivering judgment in the case, Justice Christopher Balogun, held that the prosecution failed woefully to prove its case beyond all reasonable doubt.

 Balogun held that the testimony of prosecution witnesses were weak, contradictory and not credible.

 The judge said that the attendance register of Isoyin Grammar School, Isoyin, Ijebu in Ogun State, relied upon by the prosecution was never tendered in court.

 During the trial which lasted for almost five years, the prosecution called six witnesses while the defence counsel, Mr Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN) who led six other counsel, called two witnesses.

 One of the witnesses, Mr Henry Odubela, the secretary of Isoyin Grammar School Old Students Association, had told the court that he was instigated by a member of the Island Club to write a petition against Dada.

 Odubela said that it was the petition that led to the criminal prosecution of Dada.

 The prosecution had alleged that Dada, on Nov.15, 2006, at the High Court premises in Lagos, before a commissioner for oath, knowingly and falsely deposed to an affidavit headed: “Affidavit of Confirmation of Attendance".

 The said affidavit related to his admission into Isoyin Grammar School, Isoyin, Ijebu in Ogun State.

 He was alleged to have stated on oath that at the time of his admission into the school, he was bearing the name Stephen Dada.

 He was also said to have averred that he only spent one term in the school due to lack of financial support.
