Alhaji Awwal Ibrahim, the Emir of Suleja, has advised journalists against sensationalism in their reports. The royal father stated this while making his opening remark at the 10th annual Ramadan lecture organized by Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN) in Abuja. The theme of the event was `` Peace as a Catalyst for Developmen: The Media Challenge.'' Ibrahim said that it was unfortunate that once an event happened some media outlets used the situation to their selfish interest thereby jeopardising the peace and unity of the country. He, therefore, urged them to do their job with good conscience as prescribed in the Holy Book. He advised the media to always cross check their facts before publishing and always speak the truth to avoid the consequences that might come on the Day of Judgment. He also urged the media to support the government to succeed and surmount the challenges facing the country. The guest lecturer at the event, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said that the Almighty Allah warmed muslims against attacking other people. Akintola also said that Allah has also disowned any Muslim who perpetrates violence. He, therefore, urged journalists to be mindful of what they report, saying that it was irresponsible to publish stories that could ignite or set the country into communal crisis. He, however, called on the media practitioners to focus more on investigative journalism. In her speech, Hajia Aisha Umar-Yusuf, a former Editor in the Media Trust Limited, cautioned the media practitioners to always verify their information before publishing, especially in a conflict situation. Also the Special Adviser to the President on Diaspora Matters, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, urged MMPN to support President Mohammadu Buhari administration`s anti-corruption fight. ``We are in a change era now, no extra-spending and wastage,’’she said. In his welcome address, the Chairman of MMPN, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, called on the owners of media organizations who were owing media practitioners several months of their salaries to pay them. He said that the payment was necessary in the interest of peace and development
