The Umuahia/Ikot Ekpene Federal Road before Onuigbo's election had totally collapsed with greater portion of the Abia end of the road ridden with dangerous and deadly potholes.
Some vehicles got trapped in some bad portions for weeks during the rainy season due to the deplorable condition of the roads.
The condition of the road was so bad that motorists abandoned it and veered into rural roads which pitched them against youths in the rural communities who were angry over The damages the vehicles inflict on their fragile community roads.
Hon. Onuigbo speaking in Isi Ala, headquarters of Ikwuano however promised that such trauma of the past will soon be history as he would leave no stone unturned to ensure that the Federal Ministry of Works deliver a high quality fully reconstructed road.
It will be recalled that palliative repairs on the road commenced in the tail end of 2016 through the initiatives of Senator T A Orji and Onuigbo representing the are at the National Assembly.
Onuigbo strssing that the road which links Abia to Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers states is of such strategic and economic significance that the Hon Minister of Works has promised to ensure that the road is reconstructed with heavy and durable materials owing to the heavy vehicles plying it,
Reiterating the importance of the road during ther fla-off of the palliative repair works , Senator T A Orji expressed joy that the Federal Government had also realized the importance of the road, noting: “Almost all the trailers that go to Akwa Ibom and Cross River States pass through this road; so it needs good maintenance.” Orji, however, charged the contractor, Ferotex Construction, to do a good job and condemned the shoddy work done on the road by FERMA in the past
Also at the flag-off others who expressed scepticism includes the Chairman of Ikwuano Local Council Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Larry Agwu who remarked: “If we had a say, we would not have supported FERMA handling this repair again this time around because the agency failed to do laudable work in the past.
“We shall give both the contractor and FERMA the cooperation and assistance they demand, hoping that they will do quality work this time and we wont have any reason to lament on this road again.”
