A 36 year old man identified as Chukwudi (surname withheld) who was arrested on Thursday by the police for allegedly killing his cousin (name withheld), has said he acted in defence.
Chukwudi paraded before journalists yesterday by the Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim at the police headquarters Asaba, told journalists “my intention was not to kill my brother, I acted in self defence as many of them wanted to kill me as well” adding that he had a running quarrel with his family members as he did not know it would resulted to death of his cousin.
He said that on the fateful day, he was cooking in the kitchen when the victim and other members of the family pounced on him, adding that he tried as much as possible to run, hit was caged.
According to him: “They used sticks and other items on me, they did not want to stop and I acted in defence, I’m begging for forgiveness, too much annoyance is not good, I have learnt my lessons but the police should known the deceased and others were the ones who attempted to kill me”.
But the police boss while parading the suspect said that the suspect had a quarrel with his cousin who he killed with a dagger over family land. He added that the suspect during the scuffle stabbed the victim on his lower rib with a dagger and later escaped.
“The suspect equally stabbed another person who was crying to mediate on the matter, and is at present receiving treatment in a private hospital” the police boss disclosed.
He said that the suspect was arrested following the report to the police, adding the detectives traced him to Okabiri area, off Sakponba road in Benin City, Edo State and arrested him where he was hiding.
Meanwhile, the family of Chief Lucky Ayamanor who died in a mysterious circumstance have accused the police of complicity. Chief Lucky Ayamanor, a high Chief in Sapele town was allegedly locked in the crisis when he was arrested.
Some of the family members who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity said their brother who until his mysterious death, was a Director in the Delta State Direct Labour Agency (DLA), adding the police knew what they did to him in the cell.
But in a swift reaction, the Police Image Maker in the state, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka said the police have no hand in the death of the victim, saying that policemen on patrol flagged down the victim’s Volvo Jeep and in the course of a search, they found an un-registered pump action gun loaded with live ammunition.
He said the officers insisted that they take the matter to the police station and they asked the victim to drive his car with the exhibit to the station, adding that on their way, they noticed that the victim was uneasy and, after they realized he was sick, they took him to the government hospital where he was confirmed dead by the doctors on duty.
Mr. Andrew Aniamaka said the concerned officers were arrested and are presently undergoing interrogation on the matter. Also, a 74 year old man, Pa Emmanuel Ebare has petitioned the state police commissioner, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim following the removal of his son’s car, Honda Accord from his compound allegedly by one ASP Uzoka. Pa Ebare’s petition dated May 2 2017, a copy made available to our reporter, said the car belongs to his son who later traveled abroad for a greater pasture, adding that the said car with registration number ASB 419AG had once had a terrible accident where somebody was killed and settled.
The petitioner stated that the car had since been packed, only for the police officer to have stormed his house last Monday to tow it away claiming that he was under instruction.
The 74 year old retiree however called on the police commissioner to use his good offices to assist him release the car. But Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, the police boss in the state said investigation was ongoing on the incident, adding that on completion of investigation, the car may be released.
