The Inspector-General of Police, IGP must act proactively to safeguard lives and properties at the various university's campuses, says His Royal Majesty, HRM Eze Larry Agwu, the traditional ruler of  Ajata-Na Igu Autonomous Community, Oboro in Ikwuano Local Government Area, Abia State. The traditional ruler was  expressing concerns over threats issued to the Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, MOUAU by a factional President of the National Associations of Nigerian Students, NANS, Chinonso Obasi.

 HRM Eze Larry insisted that the  IGP must immediately  identify  the authentic   President of  NANS, rather than  turn a blind eye to the prevailing situation allowing every Tom, Dick and Harry to declare himself such and act lawlessly.

 Rising from an emergency  meeting at his palace with executives and members of Ikwuano Youths Leaders Forum, HRH Eze  Larry Agwu,  described as disturbing a situation where one of the factional Presidents of NANS is threatening to burn down Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike unless the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Otunta steps down.

''Without prejudice to the issues at stake, I have heard that MOUAU VC,  Prof Otunta and Obasi are both from Ebonyi State. I have heard too that their quarrel started long ago at another institution which  Prof Otunta was heading then. I am not here to judge who is right or wrong, there are agencies of the Federal Government that can do that effectively. what I want to say without mincing words, is to advise the youngman, Obasi  to take his quarrel with Prof. Otunta back home to Ebonyi State,  where it all started. We, people of Oboro Ikwuano, host community of MOUAU will not allow him to cause mayhem here or to destroy the  precious lives of our children studying at MOUAU. To That end, I want the IGP to act proactively on this matter.''

 Eze Larry further told journalists that he gathered from records that there are various factional NANS presidents. ''It is indeed a disturbing development whereby anybody can claim to be NANS President and use such cover to threaten lives and properties in any university campus.

 The traditional ruler was also infuriated that some members of the Ikwuano Youths Leaders Forum including its president, Agomoh Santiago and chairman, Ikwuano Youths Elders Council, Emma Nwaka were arrested, detained but later released by  the  Police for calling Obasi to order. ''This is sad and unaceptable'', he declared, but urged the youths to remain law abiding.

 ''I have just been told that our youths leaders were arrested and detained by the police over this unfortunate development that  one Chinonso Obasi, who is one of the factional Presidents of NANS has issued threats capable of undermining security of lives and properties not only at MOUAU, but also within the immediate communities.

 ''Beyond, his threats, the same Chinonso Obasi has even taken steps to carry out his threats. His actions  brought him into confrontation with Ikwuano Youths, and as we speak now the Police has waded into the matter. Our youths expect the Police to act in a manner such that the crisis will be nipped in the bud''

 ''Since the Police is already aware of the development, I am therefore urging the IGP to take proactive security measures and checkmate the activities of this Chinonso Obasi which is already causing tension  amongst students at MOUAU and environs.

 ''As chairman of the Oboro Council of Traditional Rulers, the host community of MOUAU, I know that my people are peace loving and hospitable. But that is not to say that we would allow lawless elements to destroy lives and properties at will. I therefore commend the Executives and members of Ikwuano Youths Leaders Forum whose vigilance has prevented this Chinonso Obasi from carrying out his threats so far. MOUAU is domicilled within Ikwuano LGA, and we have the responsibility to protect it.

 ''Nonetheless, I am equally sad and dismayed that  the security agencies have allowed the youngman, Obasi to act with  impunity because the authentic NANS leadership has since expelled him from the association.

 ''I have here a copy of  a  letter written to President Muhammadu Buhari and signed by  three executives of NANS namely: Sunday Ogbu, Assistant Secretary;  Josephet Onwuegbu, National Treasurer; and, Aisha Hussaini, Ex-Officio, expelling  Obasi for impersonation and declaring him  persona non-grata.

 ''The letter stated that Obasi has the habit of writing frivolous petitions  against heads of tertiary institutions in order to create avenue for blackmail and extortion. It is the same issue that has brought about this  interaction.

 ''My questions are these: 'If Obasi is not NANS President, why is he using the office of NANS President to threaten MOUAU's VC and others?; Why is he threatening to burn down our University, the only Federal presence sited in Abia state in recent times?.'' the traditional ruler  asked rhetorically, stressing that the IGP must wade into the matter immediately and call the parties involved to order.
