Following the industrial dispute between management and staff of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, its Director-General,  Engr.  Mustapha Maihaja has appealed to the National Assembly to pass the Bill seeking to amend the establishment of the Agency to improve on the working condition of the staff and disaster management in the country.

 He made the appeal at the National Assembly when he led the management staff of the agency before the House of Representatives' Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness in Abuja. The meeting was at the instance of the Committee, which had invited the NEMA management and its staff union leaders to resolve the recent industrial disputes that resulted in a one day strike action by the staff last week.

  Maihaja told the committee that the misunderstanding had been resolved and that it was not the wish of the management to allow such matters to degenerate into strike action, adding that some of the issues in the disputes could be properly handled with the amendment to the NEMA establishment Act.

 It will be recalled that the Maihaja-led management  of NEMA  acted proactively and resolved Thursday, 19th October, 2017  that the dispute has been resolved. The same day the staff embarked on the 3 days warning strike

 The dispute which resulted in the closure of the NEMA offices  nationwide was resolved immediately following a meeting convened by the Minister of Labour and Productivity,  Dr Chris Ngige in Abuja with the NEMA Management led by  Engr.  Maihaja and representatives of the  national body of the Labour Union
represented by the National President of Trade Union Congress, Secretary General of the Association of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, FCT leaders of NLC and Nigeria Civil Service Union.

 Among the issues discussed were matters relating to the staff welfare and other  areas of misunderstanding which were fully resolved with timeline for implementation to be closely monitored by the Minister of labour and productivity.

 At the end of the tripartite meeting, a joint  settlement agreement was signed by both parties with the Permanent Secretary Federal  Ministry of Labour as witness.
