As bribery scandal rocks Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, the university host Community Youths leader, Comrade Sunday Kasarachi has come out in spirited defence of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Francis Otunta, absolving him from involvement in the matter while raising alarm that a member of his community has gone missing since the story came to the open.
Kasarachi who spoke to our correspondent on phone said he was reacting to our earlier story on the scandal titled: "MOUAU PRO, Ada Odefa, Husband in Bribery Scandal"
The Youths Leader said his major concern is over the whereabouts of the
representative of Chidex International Nigeria Limited, (name withheld) whom he said comes from his community.
According to Kasarachi: "Our interest in the story is first and foremost, one of our own is involved. I am worried because from your story, he is being harassed and intimidated by the Police. My concerns is that as I speak to you now, we do not know his whereabouts. And we are asking questions. His family are asking questions.
" We have met with MOUAU PRO, Mrs Odefa who was not forthcoming on the mattere ven though she is deeply involved."
Kasarachi continued, "From our investigations, I want to categorically tell you that MOUAU VC, Prof Francis Otunta has nothing to do with any demand for kick back from any contract awarded by the University. We have his word that he knows nothing about it besides signing the contract.
"Our background checks after that story surfaced on the social media, shows that some one is playing smart by linking the VC' s name to this demand
for kick back for a contract awarded for the cleaning of one of the hostels. Indeed, it is the height of wickedness for anybody to do this. We believe there is more to this and want to unravel the whole story. We want to know why somebody thinks he/shec an use the Police to intimidate our brother.
"I do not hold brief for Prof Otunta, but we know the University management awards contracts running into billions of Naira, not him. He has been Rector of a Polytechnic, and such stories has not been linked to him, why now?"
Returning to the issue of their kinsman, Kasarachi said they are following up the matter diligently to avoid his being victimised simply for insisting on doing the right thing
