Its really true, Hon Sam Onuigbo, representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency did today, Thursday, announce his defection to the APC, from the PDP. He made the announcement via a letter read on the floor of the House of Representatives plenary session, by the Speaker, Hon Femi Gbajabiamilla.
Hon Onuigbo's defection is not shocking to majority of his constituents who describe his representation as 'lack lustre', 'self serving', and 'shadow chasing'
"Its no big deal. He is on his own", an Ikwuano PDP chieftain told this reporter, but asked for time to study the situation, before further comments.
Nonethless, the minority, members of his factionalised party, notably from his Ikwuano LGA, are in shock, and speechless.
Yes, the Ikwuano chapter of the PDP has been in a long drawn tussle of supremacy. But the Onuigbo faction of the party was largely groping in the dark after the lawmaker produced his own Ikwuano LGA PDP Exco last year.
The other faction, led by PDP National Organising Secretary, Col Akobundu gained dominance in Ikwuano, and shunted the Onuigbo faction to the sidelines.
The tussle became a matter of uncertain litigation, but with no clear direction from Hon Onuigbo who became slippery afterwards.
However, the Abia state LG election scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19 was thought to be an opportunity for final settlement. The Onuigbo faction was 'gifted' with the Deputy Chairman position, plus other councillorship slots.
However, with his defection, citing crisis in his LG, it appears, Onuigbo had been dancing all along to music in his mind.
A school of thought in Abia is of the thinking that Onuigbo simply wanted to outsmart the Abia PDP whose over 20 years control of power in Abia has left the State in tatters and improverished. The thinking is that the Abia PDP plans to defect en masse to APC, in order to retain control of power in the state
