Nigeria's National Assembly's foremost voice on Climate Change and Environment, Rep Sam Onuigbo Thursday raises hopes that the Country may finally enact legislation on climate change and the environment  before the Conference of Parties, COP26 coming up in Glasgow, United Kingdom in November, 2021.

 "As we all generally agreed, the time has come to push through Nigeria’s Climate Change Bill, and ensure that we have a solid legal framework that will guide all we do. 

"Hopefully, we will be able to get this done before COP26 in November this year. My commitment to this will not waver and I am happy that many stakeholders are now onboard with this and have expressed their commitment and support", Onuigbo tweeted via his tweeter arm: @OnuigboSI

Onuigbo, who is the President, GLOBE-Nigeria, a forum of world legislators concerned about the environment and sustainable development added "Our commitment towards a world built on the foundations of a balanced environment should only grow bigger especially as our journey in this Decade of Action gathers speed".

It will be recalled that the  second term lawmaker, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency and former Chairman, House Committee on Climate Change, sponsored the Climate Change Bill, 2018, titled: 'A bill for an Act to Provide a Legal Framework for The Mainstreaming of Climate Change Responses and Actions into Government Policy Formulation, Implementation and Establishment of National Council on Climate Change and Related Matters', the bill  was passed by the National Assembly, but failed Presidential assent.

Onuigbo tweeted shortly after attending the reception organized for Rt. Hon. Alok Sharma — member of the British cabinet, and President of COP26– at the British High Commission in Abuja.


"It was an important opportunity to discuss Nigeria’s Climate Action plans with Rt. Hon. Sharma, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, the Governor of Ekiti State, His Excellency Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and many young persons committed to advancing Nigeria’s efforts towards Climate Change mitigation and adaptation", he stated in the tweet.


The COP26, Glasgow is a conference of  Countries which are signatories to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC.
