When Emma Nwaka took the decision to sponsor the 15th edition of the Ikwuano Super League, he said he was "putting his money where his heart is". And since the tournament took off Sunday, June 20, 2021, his interest keeps getting stronger
" Waoh! Have you heard that the Ikwuano Super League just entered quarter finals?", he asked in a telephone conversation with DailyLedger.com.ng, his voice gushing with excitement
He did not wait for answer before throwing the next question: "And did you notice the quality of play has been outstanding?"
"Hello? Are you there....? This writer could not proffer an answer to that question as he has merely breezed in and out during the matches.
" Yes Hon, am here"
"Ok, I asked if you noticed how good the boys are?"
"Hmmmm. Let me call you back later...."
Thanks to technology, it appears Nwaka had followed up on every detail as each match is played. It was his keen interest that prompted this follow up.
Like every contest which must produce a winner or loser, so far six (6) teams namely: Old Mat FC; School Road FC; All Stars FC; Tiger Boys FC; Chu Chuano FC; Young Stars Academy FC have qualified for the Quarter Finals. The remaining two will emerge this week through play-offs.
DailyLedger.com.ng reports that the tournament kicked off with (15) fifteen teams.
Any potential World star spotted so far? The man behind it all, and chairman of the Organising Committee, Engr Chukwuemeka Irozuru answered in the affirmative.
"Some of the boys have displayed exceptional skills, and right away, I can tell you that players like Lucky Okechukwu and Cookey Nwachukwu, both of Cookey Team FC have shown real talent. Okechukwu is an utility player while Nwachukwu is a defender
" Two goalkeepers, Promise Uche, (School Road FC); And Chibuzo Ude, (All Stars FC) have equally impressed me. There are others, unfortunately I only know their nick names"
Like he observed earlier, Nwaka agreed that the quality of play has been excellent.
"I see great potentials here. Remember what I said last time? "If this generation of Ikwuano youths can see one of their contemporaries who once played in the Ikwuano Super League playing as an international football in Europe or the English Premier League, I leave the rest of the story to your imagination."
The Ikwuano Super League a local derby in Ikwuano LGA of Abia state where football clubs sharpen and showcase their skills is already attracting attention outside the State. The latest development is that the winner of the on-going 15th edition will square off against Ifuhu FC, an emerging top foothball club in Akwa Ibom state.
The encounter scheduled for second week of December will attract dignitaries from both States including Special Adviser to the Akwa Ibom governor on Sports.
Hon Nwaka has confirmed to DailyLedger.com.ng that he will on the sidelines to cheer up the Ikwuano champions and will equally make arrangements to convey all football fans from Ikwuano to the venue.
