The Nigeria in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM Monday threatened to drag the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council to the NUJ National Secretariat alleging that an online news blogging platform, Forefrontng com maliciously twisted documents it sent to the Council.
The Diaspora Commission is protesting Forefrontng.com's story titled: "Diaspora Commission Squanders N130m Research Funds on Trips, Others" maintaining that the story was not only sourced, but had facts twisted from documents it sent in response to Messrs Emmanuel Ogbeche and Ochiaka Ugwu, chairman and Secretary respectively of the FCT Council of the NUJ. "To now twist facts and figures and come up with such a ridiculous headline and story, smirks of sinister and mischievous intention", alleged Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head, Media, PR and Protocol unit of the Commission in a statement.
However, Forefrontng.com has waved aside the allegations explaining that it's story was "... independently sourced and had no correlation whatsoever with the inquiry by NUJ, Abuja Council. The story had to do with the 2021 budget for Research and Development and not 2022"
Forefrontng. com had reported amongst others that NIDCOM spent N28.9 million, about 22.20% from its N130 million budget for Research and Development to fund 'Online presence'
A breakdown shows that N19,27,566 million was spent to fund NIDCOM APP phase 1; While website upgrade, maintainance and application was funded with N9,604,888.75 million. The sum of N2.4 million was spent on Facebook and messenger.
The Commission also spent N11 million to fund an Online Radio amongst others.
NIDCOM however argues that every spending from it's meagre resources is justified.
