The planned shutdown of the local government secretariats in Anambra State my have be suspended, after all.
The President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe, who dropped hint explained the reason for the suspension of the planned temporary shutdown of the Twenty-one Local Government Councils in the state was to enable the new administration time to settle and assess further development.
Adigwe in a statement issued weekend, said the suspension followed a meeting and agreement labour leaders had with the state government. Adigwe stated: “We just finished a meeting with the newly-confirmed Commissioner, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs and other government officials..
“They appealed that we should give them a chance towards arresting this menace of destroying Local Government properties." According to NULGE boss: “Note that nothing has been done by the government to the deceased family of our staff at Nnewi South.
“I presented a strong position for the security of lives and properties of our staff who have been the target of these attacks and they accepted to do everything towards arresting the ugly situation and to carry us along as a union.
“They also promised to make a case for our deceased staff in Nnewi South as well. Continuing, he said: "In view of this, I humbly appeal for your understanding and for the suspension of the earlier directive to shut down LG councils temporarily.
“I also appeal that we give peace and negotiation a chance, considering the fact that this is a new administration. He revealed that Union's State Executive Committee (SEC) would meet today on the next line. The planned Local Government shutdown followed recent attacks on Nnewi South and Aguata Local Government Secretariats by unknown gunmen. Recalled that
Adigwe, had in an earlier statement, confirmed the decision to temporarily shut down the 21 Local Government Councils in the state with effect from last Friday to Wednesday April 13, 2022, citing gunmen attacks on workers and facilities in the Local Government offices as reason.
"Pls ensure that all Local Governments were closed down from henceforth till wednesday when the decision of S.E.C. will be communicated to the workers, " his statement added.
