Prof Uwaoma Uche 


Gregory University Uturu, GUU, Abia State on Wednesday announced the appointment of Prof. Uwaoma Uche as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the institution with effect from December 15, 2022.  


The announcement was contained in a letter titled, APPOINTMENT AS DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR ACADEMICS addressed to Prof. Uwaoma Uche, Dean College of Social & Management Sciences with Ref: GUU/AVC/NP/UU/APPT/072/12/2022 and signed by the Vice Chancellor of Gregory University, Prof. Augustine Uwakwe. 


The appointment letter spelt out the duties and responsibilities of the deputy vice Chancellor which are; to assist the Vice Chancellor in the performance of his administrative duties as relates to general academic activities, exercise and perform the academic functions of the Vice Chancellor in the absence of the Vice Chancellor, to chair the ceremonial committees in the absence of the Vice Chancellor and assist the Vice Chancellor in  coordinating academic activities of all the Colleges. Others are to work with the Director of Academic Planning (DAP) to ensure academic standards and perform any other duties as assigned by the Vice Chancellor. 


Until his appointment, Uche, a professor of  Communications was the Dean, College of Social & Management Sciences of the University and Director, Institute of Continuing Education Programme, ICEP, as well as the Director of Joint University Preliminary examination Board, JUPEB Foundation School at Gregory University Uturu. He comes with a heavy load of experience to the  office having served in different capacities relating  to academic and administrative duties in many institutions of higher learning. 


Uche attended Ebem Primary School Ohafia and Enuda Primary School, Abiriba before proceeding to Edo College Benin for his secondary school education. He is a graduate of the University of Calabar, and also has an MA and PhD degrees from the same University specialising in Broadcast Management.  He has authored eight books, edited seven and has 66 articles in local and international journals to his credit. 


Prof. Uche’s professional and academic career spans over three decades of active engagement in the Communications and Broadcast sectors.  His sojourn in Mass Communications began in 1989 as a Presenter with the Cross River Broadcasting Corporation. Thereafter, he has traversed the Communications sector as a teacher and practitioner beginning with his stint as a Lecturer in Mass Communications at the Cross River State Polytechnic before moving on to teach Mass Communications in other institutions notably, Abia State University, Uturu, Temple Gate Polytechnic Aba, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, Rhema University, Aba and Gregory University, Uturu.  


Prof. Uche facilitated the setting up of Mass Communications Departments in several institutions including Renaissance University Ugbawaka, Enugu State, Cross Rivers University of Technology, Rhema University, Aba, Abia State University, Uturu, Hezekiah University, Umudim and Gregory University, Uturu. 


He is a Fellow of the Institute of Policy Development Management, IPDM, Chairman, Association of Communications Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, ACSPN, and a member of the following professional bodies: African Council for Communication Education, ACCE, Institute of Policy Development Management, IPDM, Institute of Mass Communication and Information Management, IMIM, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR and Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ and a Life Member, Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International. 


Prof. Uche is also a Resource Person to the Nigerian Universities Commission, NUC and National Board of Technical Education, NBTE in Mass Communication and also to the Technical Committee of the Nigerian National Development Plan 2020-2050. He was Secretary General of Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU, Abia State University Chapter.


An On Air Media Personality, Public Speaker and University Orator, Professor Uche served as Special Aide on Political Enlightenment to Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, Special Adviser to Governor T. A. Orji on Orientations and Special Adviser to Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu on Grassroots Mobilization. 


He has served his native community, Ihechiowa in many capacities one of which is serving as the current Publicity Secretary of Ihechiowa Development Union, IDU. He is happily married with children
