1. No fewer than 50 people have been killed and over 170 houses burnt in renewed onslaught on residents of Izombe in Oguta, Imo State, in the last two weeks. Factional National President, Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), Igboayaka O Igboayaka, disclosed this at a press briefing in Owerri, the state capital, this weekend.
2. Nigeria’s total public debt as of March 31, 2023, has grown to N49.95 trillion ($108.30 billion). The country’s public debt added another N3 trillion between December 2022 and March 2023. The Debt Management Office (DMO) in its quarterly assessment of the country’s debt profile said the new figure of N49.95 trillion does not include the N22.719 trillion Ways and Means facility from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
3. Three medical students, two from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and one from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, are feared dead after their boat capsized at Marina Resort waterways in Calabar, Cross River State. The incident happened around 3 pm on Saturday with 15 passengers, including 13 medical students, in the cruise boat.
4.Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC backs out of proposed hike in electricity tariffs. Recall, Electricity Distribution Companies have stated that tariffs will increase from July 1, 2023. In statements sent to respective consumers on Sunday night, the DisCos stated that the review was due to the fluctuation of the naira in the exchange rate market.
5. The Federal Government has declared Wednesday and Thursday, 28 and 29 June, public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Oluwatoyin Akinlade, made the announcement in a statement on Monday.
“The Federal Government has declared Wednesday June 28th and Thursday June 29th 2023 Public Holidays in commemoration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration and heartily felicitates with the Muslim Ummah at home and in the diaspora,” the official noted.

Wagner mercenaries headed back to their base on Sunday after Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin agreed to allow their leader to avoid treason charges and accept exile in neighbouring Belarus.
The agreement halted an extraordinary crisis — a private army led by Putin’s former close ally Yevgeny Prigozhin trying to storm Moscow — but analysts said Wagner’s revolt had exposed Putin’s rule as more fragile than previously thought.
His hubris-fuelled insurrection failed through a combination of hot-headed ambition and his inability to read Putin’s inner circle, of which he was a member, properly.
As one informed Moscow resident told me, the “system wasn’t ready for the radical change” he wanted.
7. Edo Govt Offers Aminat lmoitsemeh Automatic Employment
Edo State Government has offered automatic employment to Miss Yusuf Aminat lmoitsemeh, a first class law graduate of the Lagos State University (LASU). State Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu said it was in line with government policy of offering automatic employment to Edo indigenes who graduate with First Class in any university.
The Edo-born academic genius, emerged the best ever graduate of LASU with a 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), in the institution’s Law degree programme.
8. Ribadu Returns to Centre Stage
A retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Nuhu Ribadu, has officially taken over from Maj-Gen Babagana Monguno (retd) as Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA).
Ribadu, a pioneer Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was previously appointed Special Adviser on Security to President Bola Tinubu on June 15, 2023
At a brief event in Abuja on Monday, Ribadu promised to live up to the expectations of Nigerians and secure the country from all forms of insecurity such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, among others.
9. Opposition Senators accuse Akpay, Presidency of plot to impose leaders on Minority Caucus
"Attempt to foist a one party dictatorship would be resisted and would fail. We call on all members of the minority political parties to work together in unity to defend the democratic institution of the Senate and Nigeria".
Some senators who belong to the minority caucus in the 10th Assembly have accused the Presidency and the Senate leadership of plotting to destabilise the minority caucus of the Senate in order to impose a leader on them.
They, however, warned that it would be resisted.
The Senate has four Senate minority principal offices, which are being contested for by lawmakers elected on the platform of the PDP and Labour Party, which have the largest number of senators in the minority caucus.
10. Do you qualify for Student loan in Nigeria? : Conditions under which a student may access the loan are set forth in the recently passed Student Loan Act. The Act stipulates requirements and exclusions for receiving student loans. One of the rules states that a student or their parents cannot have a history of loan defaults.
