The Nigeria Police Force has reportedly arrested Hon. Alexander Ikwecheghi even as it opens investigation into the lawmaker's alleged assault if a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya.
In a related development the social media Influencer, Very Darkman, VDM has shown interest in the matter and vowed to get justice for Abuwatseya. He has reportedly engaged Deji Adeyanju, a legal practitioner who has since petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IGP accusing the Abia lawmaker of Grievous Assault, Abuse of of Power, Attempted Murder and Threat to Life.
Dailyledger.com.ng reports that the Nigerian Police took to its X social media arm and stated that it is aware of the incident which happened on Sunday, Oct. 27 and subsequently went viral on the social media, with Alex Ikwechegh trending on X.
"The Nigeria Police Force is aware of the incident between a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, which took place on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja. The FCT Command is actively handling the case following Mr. Abuwatseya's official report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
"The Police Force also urges the public to refrain from using the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others, as such actions undermine the values of impartiality that the IGP's office upholds", the Police stated
According to the Punch newspaper in its report, "In a brewing scandal, the Nigeria Police Force has opened an investigation into an alleged assault by Hon. Alexander Ikwecheghi on a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya. The incident reportedly occurred on October 27, 2024, in the upscale Maitama district of Abuja. According to Mr. Abuwatseya, the altercation began after he requested Hon. Ikwecheghi to step outside to retrieve a parcel. In response, the legislator allegedly reacted by slapping the driver three times and issued a menacing warning, stating that he could “make the driver disappear.”
"Following the confrontation, Mr. Abuwatseya filed an official complaint at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters, prompting the FCT Command to initiate an investigation into the matter. The police confirmed that they are fully aware of the incident and emphasized their commitment to impartiality. In a public statement, the Force urged individuals, particularly public figures, to refrain from using the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) or any other authority as a tool for intimidation.
"As the investigation proceeds, Hon. Ikwecheghi’s alleged actions have triggered widespread condemnation. Social media users have voiced their concerns about what they perceive as an abuse of power, calling for a thorough police inquiry to ensure justice is served. Observers argue that incidents like this not only highlight the challenges faced by service providers but also raise critical questions about accountability among public officials.
"The Nigeria Police Force, in its statement, reiterated its dedication to justice and maintaining public trust. “Any attempt to misuse authority or influence will not be tolerated, and this investigation will follow due process,” stated an FCT Command representative.
Meanwhile, a civil society organisation, Take It Back Movement has demanded an immediate arrest of the lawmaker.
"We demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of House of Rep member Alex Ikwechegh over the assault of the hustling Abuja Uber driver. The dishonorable Rep member must be asked to explain the number of innocent Nigerians he has caused to disappear without a trace" the group stated on its X social media arm
